Upgrade

McAfee defines an upgrade as a deployment where a version of McAfee Endpoint Security already exists on the endpoint. See “Migration” if legacy McAfee software (McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention, and McAfee SiteAdvisor Enterprise) already exists on the endpoint.

Unlike other categories of Mac apps, security/antivirus software may protect themselves from being removed. Therefore, in the case of McAfee Endpoint Security, there are some uninstall tricks you should know about. Read on to know more.

The first point – make sure to quit McAfee Endpoint Security before the uninstall

Once you install McAfee Endpoint Security, it will launch automatically on your Mac and it is hard to shut down. If the app is active, you can click the McAfee Endpoint Security icon from the menu bar and choose Quit McAfee Endpoint Security for Mac.

Some users report that McAfee Endpoint Security cannot be closed even by this way. Well, to tackle with this issue, you are suggested to reboot your Mac into Safe Mode, thus to prevent McAfee Endpoint Security from automatically launching itself.

After that, you can proceed with standard uninstall. Two options are available here.

1. Uninstall McAfee Endpoint Security in Finder

  • Open up the Finder, and head to the /Applications folder from sidebar or Go menu
  • Right click on McAfee Endpoint Security in the folder and choose Move to Trash
  • When prompted, enter your admin password and click OK to allow the deletion

How to manually detect McAfee Endpoint Security leftovers and remove them all? Advanced users may have known the search trick to remove app renmants in the hidden system folders. If you have no idea how to do it right, follow the steps below:

  • Open up a Finder window, click the Go from the Menu Bar, and choose Go to Folder
  • Enter /Library in the box that pops up, and hit Enter key to open up the folder
  • Type McAfee in the search box, and click on the Library below the Search: bar
  • Control-click the files and folders whose names contain McAfee, and move them to the Trash. You will be prompted to enter the admin password to allow the change
  • Repeat the procedure to find out and remove associated items in ~/Library folder
